Force has both strength and direction. Unbalanced forces cause an object to change its motion. Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion.

Forces can be applied at a distance through magnetism and static electricity. The closer magnets are, the stronger the force. Magnets can push or pull other magnets, depending on the poles. Electromagnets can be turned on and off with electricity. Static electricity can push or pull things without touching them.

A life cycle shows how living things grow and change over time. Plants start as seeds then most form flowers & fruit. Animals start from eggs or live birth then they grow up and mate. All life cycles start at birth, end with death and involve growth & reproduction.

An ecosystem is a community of interacting organisms & their environment. Organisms only survive in an ecosystem when their specific needs are met. Newly introduced organisms can throw off the balance of an ecosystem. A healthy ecosystem has many different kinds of organisms.

Most traits are passed down from parents. Different individuals have different traits. Some traits are influenced by the environment.

A pattern of motion is the repeated process of an object moving. Patterns of motion can be used to make predictions. When one surface rubs against another we get friction. Friction slows things down.

Weather is the day-to-day variation of the atmosphere’s condition locally. Climate is the year-by-year variation of the atmosphere’s condition over a large area. Scientists record weather patterns across different times and areas to make predictions.

A fossil is the remains or traces of prehistoric life. An extinct animal is one that is no longer found on earth today. Fossils provide evidence about past life and their environment.

Animals adapt to their environment. Animals adapt to protect themselves. Adaptations also help animals obtain food.

Animals form groups to defend themselves. Animal Group Behavior can involve a few animals or thousands. Groups can help animals get food.

Science is the process of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation. The more evidence we have about a theory the more confident we are about it. You must be willing to change your mind based on new evidence. Many things around us appear to be science but are not.
