Instructions
Reach into your kit & pull out the bag that says Experiment 29. Take everything out of the bag and use the bag in place of your white mat.
Place the plastic cups in the center of the white mat, and fill one of the cups 3/4 of the way up with warm water from the sink.
Next, grab the container of sodium borate, open it and add half a scoop to the water. Using your stirring stick, stir the powder into the water to mix for 30 seconds.
Now, open the bottle of pH indicator, and add 10 drops to the empty cup. Gently move the cup around to even out the drops inside your cup.
Next, to perform the magic trick, grab cup of water and pour it into your empty cup with the drops at the bottom and watch the water change color right before your eyes.
To perform the next trick, move the cups and materials to the side and open the magic mystery pen then, go grab or ask for a dollar bill.
First, do the trick yourself before sharing with others. You will tell your audience that you are going to make a mark on the dollar using the pen but instead it will look like you stabbed the pen through the dollar bill. Then you will magically pull the pen out of the dollar revealing no tear in the dollar.
The magic pen actually has two tips, and one tip is removable. Start the trick by holding the pen with the removable tip out and place it behind the dollar. While talking to your audience, you’ll disconnect the tip and hold it behind the dollar.
Next, you’re going to pretend to stab the bill, but in reality you are just going to be connecting the tip to the pen.
Now, grab the pen, and while holding the dollar bill, quickly pull the pen straight across the bill. This will leave the pen connected and the dollar bill will appear to have no hole.
For the last step, you’ll hand your audience the dollar bill to examine, and while they are looking at the dollar, you will secretly hold the tip of the pen in your hand, and with your little finger grab and hold the tip to hide it in your hand while you show your audience that you have a normal pen.
To perform our last trick, open the Lubor’s lens package and take out the filter. Place the magic pen in your hand along the middle of your fingers.
Now take the lens and hold it horizontally while you scan it across your hand to reveal you can see the pen. Then, give the lens a shake, and while doing that, you’ll change the position of the lens to vertical (up and down) and then scan it across your hand again to reveal the pen has disappeared.
How It Works
In the last experiment, we used something called a Lubor's Lens to make objects disappear. By turning the lens one way, we could see the object in our hand. But when we turned it the other way, it seemed to vanish right before our eyes! Science can be just as amazing as magic when you know the secrets behind it.
