First, grab the pair of dark polarizing filters and peel the protective layer off the front and back of each filter. To remove, gently scratch at the corner to lift.

Next, take the filters and pass one in front of the other. If you don’t see anything, try turning one filter 90 degrees and pass it over the other again.

STEP 4

Now open a white screen on your computer. You can use this link “All White Screen” and try turning one of your filters in front of the screen. You should see the amount of light change that shines through.

Next, place the clear plastic sheet in front of you, and place 12 pieces of tape onto the top in any direction you want, just like a work of art.

Now place the sheet with tape in front of the computer screen and look through the polarizing filter. You can turn the filter to see the tape changes colors.

If you want to add more pieces of tape to the plastic sheet you can! Then try looking at it again to reveal more colors than before.

STEP 8

Next, place the sheet of plastic to the side and grab the plastic spoon. Please it in front of the computer screen and look at it through your polarizing filter.

STEP 9

Now, try using the tape dispenser. You can try different things from around the house. Things that are clear plastic usually work best.

STEP 10

Last, try using the plastic bag that your materials came in. Try stretching pieces of the bag and then look at it through your filter.

How It Works

In the polarizing filters experiment, we explored the magic of light and how it interacts with different materials. The filters we used act like special sunglasses for light, helping us see things in a new way.

When we held the filters in front of objects like the layered tape art, a plastic spoon, a tape dispenser, and a stretched plastic bag, we noticed changes in colors and patterns. This happens because the filters let some light through while blocking other light waves, revealing hidden details and creating a captivating visual experience.
