Instructions

STEP 1
0:00

First put on your gloves, then, reach into your kit and pull out the bag that says Experiment 32. Take everything out of the bag and place in on your white mat. Then, put the bag back in the box.

STEP 2
0:31

Place the plastic beaker in the center of the white mat, open the bottle of liquid labeled “Sodium Zincate”, and empty it all into your beaker.

STEP 3
1:28

Next, unwrap the plastic from the battery and connect it to your alligator clamps.

STEP 4
2:02

Next, grab and fill the empty plastic cup halfway with cold water.

STEP 5
2:15

Now, grab little metal gear and clip the red wire to the gear. It’s important to make sure you connect the gear to the red wire.

STEP 6
2:31

Next, take the remaining black wire and clip it to the edge of one of the pennies.

STEP 7
3:02

Now place the black wire first into the beaker of sodium zincate, then place the red wire with the gear in the beaker on the opposite side so that they do not touch. Let them sit there for 5 minutes.

STEP 8
4:30

After 5 minutes have passed, reach in and grab the out the black wire with the penny to see how it has changed to silver. Next, drop it into the cup of water.

STEP 9
4:56

Next, take the pair of tweezers and grab the silver penny out of the water and use the paper towel to dry it off and give it a little shine.

STEP 10
5:34

Let’s do it again. Simply clip the black wire to the remaining penny, and place it back into the beaker of sodium zincate for 5 minutes. Then we can take it out using the tweezers, drop it into the water, then use the paper towel to dry it.

STEP 11
6:56

Next, we’ll make a gold penny, but for this part, you NEED AN ADULT. Adults, hold a silver penny using the tweezers and with a lighter or the stove, heat the penny for 20 seconds and then drop it into the cold water.

STEP 12
8:13

Now, you can reach in with your tweezers to pull out the gold penny and use the paper towel to dry and buff the penny.

How It Works

First, we unveiled the secret of turning copper pennies into shimmering silver treasures. With the help of a battery and alligator clamps, we ran a tiny electric current through the penny while it bathed in the sodium zincate. In just five short minutes, we saw the penny's remarkable shift to a brilliant silver hue!

But we weren't not done yet – we also created a gleaming brass masterpiece. After repeating the electrifying process, we added a dash of heat for twenty seconds, performed under adult supervision, of course. This magical touch didn't just make it look gold; it actually formed a special layer of brass, unlocking the secrets of metal transmutation right before our eyes. It's science like you've never seen it before, where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary!
