Instructions

STEP 1
0:00

Reach into your kit & pull out the bag that says Experiment 19. Take everything out of the bag and place it around your white mat.

STEP 2
2:24

Grab the large mat, open it up and lay it out in front of you. Then place the 3 beakers on top giving them a little bit of space in-between.

STEP 3
2:56

Now, open the bottle of hydrogen peroxide and fill all three beakers to the 30mL line.

STEP 4
4:06

Next, open the bottle of dish soap, and using one of your pipettes, fill it to the 1 mark and squeeze it into your beaker. Do this for all three beakers.

STEP 5
5:11

Next, add 5 drops of food coloring to each beaker. You can choose any colors you want. Remember to remove the ring when you uncap the bottle so it doesn’t fall into your beaker.

STEP 6
6:03

Grab the tube of Active Yeast, open the cap, and fill it with warm water to the 30mL line. Make sure to use warm water, not hot and not cold.

STEP 7
7:05

Now put the cap back on tight and gently shake it back and forth for 10 seconds to mix it all together. Be sure you get any clumps on the bottom.

STEP 8
7:32

Now we need to leave the tube of water and yeast to sit for 2 minutes

STEP 9
8:03

Next, grab your other pipette and fill it to the top with the yeast mixture. Squeeze it all into the first beaker. Then repeat this step for the other two beakers.

STEP 10
8:42

Now watch as your foam continues to erupt and grow. You can touch it, but be careful because it is very warm.

STEP 11
9:29

This time, grab the rest of the bottle of hydrogen peroxide and place it on your mat. Add the rest of the dish soap and 10 drops of any color and mix it around to combine.

STEP 12
10:15

To activate, grab the rest of the tube of yeast and pour it into your bottle.

How It Works

Hydrogen peroxide is also known as H2O2. That's the chemical symbol for hydrogen peroxide. It's different from water, which is H2O because it has more Oxygen than water. We used this extra oxygen and released as a gas through a chemical reaction. In this experiment we used yeast as a catalyst in order to release that oxygen.

When we poured the yeast into the hydrogen peroxide it became oxygen gas and released into the water, and since we used dish soap it made lots of bubbles.
